What is the difference between Magic and Theurgy (also called High Magick)?

Magic is the use of hidden abilities of the human being to achieve a specific purpose.

Some call it psychic powers or parapsychology.

Magic is not concerned with moral issues.

Theurgy (High Magick) seeks spiritual development and the ascent to the divine. This is done through rituals and psychic techniques associated with high moral standards.

Theurgy contains magical practices, but the latter does not necessarily contain theurgy.

What is a Theurgic Tradition?

The Order of the Aurum Solis is an initiatic tradition that is the heir of the Western Theurgic Tradition.

It is rooted on the principles of the Hermetic Tradition which was created by the Egyptian God Thoth. We can provide three main principles that attest the reality and efficiency of our work and lineage:

1- The direct lineage of the Grand Master:

In an authentic Theurgic Order such as the Aurum Solis, the function of Grand Master is not the result of an election or a personal desire. A Grand Master chooses his successor and gives to him the occult heritage through a specific initiation. During this unique ceremony the new Grand Master is connected to the gold chain of the past Grand Masters. This theurgic empowerment gives him the full authority to become the heir of the Tradition and perform all his duties. As a reminder, it can be useful to know that Grand Master of the Aurum Solis is a lifetime function that can end only with the death of the Grand Master or an official and irrevocable renunciation. When he is alive, the current Grand Master prepare a will that gives the name of his successor. Of course, his successor has been previously secretly consecrated. The rituals he practices as Grand Master are able to maintain the egregore of the Tradition as truly living, active, and dynamic.

2- The power to connect the initiates to the egregore of the Order:

A true initiation must awake the initiate and connect him with the egregore of the Order that is able to help and protect him. This power is the result of the initiatic chain of the Order. Its visible manifestation can be found in the rituals, ceremonies and the individual work.

3- The communication of sacred objects:

An authentic order gives to the initiate “sacred objects” that have been ritually consecrated and materialize his connection to the invisible chain.

An example that was made public by the Aurum Solis is that of an individual object called Tessera. It manifests the direct link with the Mother Tessera and the heart of the order, weaving an occult web that ensures a constant connection and protection from the egregore. Tesseri are not always the same according the degree reached in the curriculum.

What is the Ogdoadic Tradition?

The tradition of High Magic goes back to the God Thoth. He is the father and the founder of this occult lineage.

During the 20th century druidic and shamanic traditions were incorporated in the Aurum Solis under the name “Green flame of Albion.” In the 70s, the past Grand Masters Denning and Phillips created the expression “Ogdoadic Tradition” to talk about this hermetic and theurgic lineage that eventually became the Aurum Solis.

To be very clear, nobody was talking about an Ogdoadic Tradition before this modern use. The Ogdoadic Tradition is the Ordo Aurum Solis and does not exist outside of it as stated in the oldest version of the Rules and Regulations of the Order (Access the archive by clicking here).

This tradition was perpetuated in secret in the Mediterranean World and Europe over the centuries. From the Renaissance, it has incorporated the most important elements of magical Qabalah and astrology. This Tradition can be considered as the true heart of sacred Western Mysteries.

As the “Declaration of Legitimacy” of the Grand Master clearly states, the Grand Master of the Aurum Solis (today Jean-Louis de Biasi) is the only one that holds the “keys and ceremonies necessary to establish an Adept as an Adeptus Plenus (or Full Adept).” As stated by the former Grand Master in this declaration, any other person is “unable to establish any person as an Adeptus Plenus according to the ceremonies, intent and inner plane contact of the Order Aurum Solis.”

Therefore, anyone claiming to represent the Ogdoadic Tradition without being a Grand Officer of the Aurum Solis in good standing with the Order is trying to fool people and play with words to mislead the public. As we just stated, the oldest version of the Rules and Regulations highlight even more clearly this undeniable fact.

The Past Grand Master Osborne Phillips has taken the time to explain that the only person to hold the keys of adepthood and the archives of the Order. Therefore, any group which is not the Aurum Solis itself declaring that he possesses inner degrees or techniques of this Tradition contradicts the rules of transmission. We call this a lie and we invite you to beware of imitations. We will not hesitate to legally pursue anyone who attempts to maintain an ambiguity that might be prejudicial to the public. This is a question of honesty.

What has been called the Ogdoadic Tradition, that is to say the Aurum Solis, is a beautiful and remarkable initiatic tradition that succeeded to maintain a proper organization without tarnishing its legacy and its innermost rituals. The traditional rules of appointment of a new Grand Master allowed this tradition to continue with all the strength of this legacy. It has been the case in the past, remains true today and will remain so in the future. It is for all these reasons that the Aurum Solis is a unique and exemplary initiatic Order within the Western Tradition.

Why do I need an initiatic school?

In our time it seems that knowledge is at hand. The internet and multiple books appear to contain everything one might wish.

Then why enroll in a school?

The simple answer is that we learn better in contact with experienced people and under the guidance of those who have mastered the art that you want to learn!

Our life is short, time is precious. It is better to be part of an honest and reputable group. Then you will be certain to be protected, to progress more efficiently and in the right direction.

In addition, an authentic initiation will give something to you that no book can give you.

What is an initiation?

An initiation is a ritual performed for a candidate in order to achieve various spiritual results.

Among the most important:

- Connection to an egregore

- Changes in states of consciousness

- Awakening psychic abilities

- Preparing your afterlife

These initiation rituals can be separated into two principal categories: 1- symbolic rituals; 2- theurgic rituals.

1- Symbolic Rituals:

These rituals are using symbols present during the ceremony. These symbols are intended to trigger a general psychological effect in the candidate, in the hope that this impact generates a succession of effects in his unconscious, his psyche and his soul. In such a symbolic ritual, the initiator tries to create a profound effect in the candidate by repercussion. Most of the Masonic rituals belong to this category.

2- Theurgic Rituals:

This is the category of the Aurum Solis. The theurgic rituals use a special process to truly act directly on the invisible body of the candidate. Consequently, the initiator is consciously working on two levels: 1- the physical level; 2- the invisible level. In the latter case this a work on the psychic bodies.

The result is much deeper, lasting and very effective!

Of course, these two types of rituals can be combined with each other. The symbolic ritual does not necessarily imply the theurgic level unless the initiators were trained in it. However, the theurgic ritual necessarily implies the use of symbols and different magical tools.

Where does the Aurum Solis coming from?

The Aurum Solis has been constituted under its current form in 1897. However, this initiatic Order transmitting the sacred mysteries of Theurgy dates back long before the Christian era and has its roots on the African continent, in Egypt.

That's where it was born. A lineage of initiates, the Masters of the gold chain, maintained this Ogdoadic heritage (tradition of the God Thoth) that lead to the Aurum Solis.

How many Grand Masters the Aurum Solis have?

Since its inception, the Order of the Aurum Solis has maintained a clear and unique lineage of Grand Masters. This is rare among contemporary initiatic Orders who seem to spend a lot of time bickering and splitting.

Since 1897, there have been ten Grand Masters, traditionally appointed for life unless health issues or formal resignation lead to a change.

Vivian Godfrey, has been until today the only female Grand Master. She was in charge for 20 years, until her death.

Jean-Louis de Biasi is the current Grand Master and received the full powers of the Tradition in 2003.

In how many countries the Order is present?

The Order of the Aurum Solis is present all around the world. You can learn more about the places where you can meet the Order by clicking here.

It is a beautiful expression of true international brotherhood.

How the Order of the Aurum Solis is organized?

Aurum Solis is governed by Rules and Regulations that define the administrative and initiatic aspects of the Order. (See some of the archives here)

Since its birth, the Order Aurum Solis was managed according to the principles enshrined in the regulations by a Grand Master, an Associate Grand Master and a Council of the Order (Collegium Cathedrarum).

All Houses of the Order are in direct relation with the Collegium Cathedrarum (for the esoteric part of the Order) and the General Administrator (for the administrative part of the Order).

How many degrees or initiations can be found in the Ordo Aurum Solis?

There are four degrees in the Order, preceded by a period of training called “Pronaos.”

The first three levels take place over several years in a rigorous gradual process.

The fourth initiation (Adeptus Plenus) is given to a few companions according their personal achievements.

This step will allow the companion to go further in the path of theurgy. This is the step during which retreat periods are provided, allowing the student to complete some important functions in the Order and to go further in his own practice.

It is easy to understand that it is difficult to provide information on these advanced elements of the initiatic path. We can simply say that they are the heart of the theurgic path. Reading Iamblichus and the text of the Asclepius will bring a lot of light on these aspects.

Along with this, the Order has had for many years, specialized groups deepening various aspects of the legacy of the Aurum Solis. These groups are sometimes formed in Guilds, in memory of the Italian period of the Order. We can quote Guilds of “Jerusalem Cross,” the “Lords of Topaz,” the “Red Fleur de Lis,’ the “Knights of the bronze cross,” the “Knights of the Red Cross,” the “Flame Holders,” the “Immortals,” the “Adepts of Gnosis,” etc. Some of these traditional denominations have obviously been merged because they corresponded to elements of the core curriculum study. Others were placed in specialized classes. Some of these inner groups are revealed to the companions only after specific steps. These various groups (or guilds) sometimes give specific initiations, all coming from the legacy of the Aurum Solis.

How does the progress in the degrees take place?

It is important to know a few fundamental things:

1- The progression is individual and is based on the practice of specific rituals;

2- During your journey you will be supported by a more advanced companion;

3- The reports sent to your mentor will allow the validation your individual practices.

4- The mastering of your psychic abilities must be demonstrated before the initiations;

5- Your moral standards and your work on your ego are also considered. The medals we cherish are magic talismans used in rituals, not just honorary decorations.

We wish that every companion manifests the essential virtues that are goodwill, brotherhood, seriousness, work, fidelity, courtesy and honesty. We believe these values are essential and no one can progress in the degrees without them. This is how an initiatic Order remains serious, honest and spiritually powerful!

Is the Aurum Solis selling correspondence courses?

No, this is not the way that the Ordo Aurum Solis works.

An initiate of the Order has access to very extensive material such as:

- A gradual curriculum composed of individual (and group) rituals allowing you to reach the highest levels of initiation to the “Mysteries;”

- Simple and effective inner exercises, developed by Western initiate philosophers helping you to purify your mind and soul;

- A set of mystical practices to put you in connection with the Immortal Divinities watching over the Aurum Solis;

- A gradual communication of magic keys (formulas, symbols, sacred words) applicable to all situations of your life;

- Teachings of the magical Qabalah (Hebrew and Greek);

- A theoretical and practical study of the main Mediterranean traditions such as Pythagorism, Orphism, and Mithraism.

All these aspects are associated with comments, explanations and lessons.

We are very far from groups that talk about the way to learn secrets with a few pages per month. Such claims are really far-fetched...

Knowing what exists in other initiatic orders, we can really say that there is nothing more complete than what you find in the Aurum Solis.

Any adult man or woman can apply if they are driven by a real desire to start an initiatic journey of ascent towards the Divine, to control his or her psychic abilities and live by the moral values previously explained.

Are there any incompatibilities for being a member of the Order?

Yes!

The following are not compatible with the philosophy of the Aurum Solis: lack of desire to work to your own personal evolution, unwillingness, lack of tolerance, desire for personal and human honors, extremist ideas or behaviors, religious fundamentalism, the belief in the superiority of one sex over the other or a particular ethnic group over others, etc.

Nothing can be considered more incompatible for the Order.

How do I enroll in the Aurum Solis?

Becoming a member of the Pronaos is very simple. You can do it directly from this website site by clicking here >

Do you accept children?

No!

In order to become an initiate of the Ordo Aurum Solis or even begin the Pronaos, you must be an adult.

The fact that parents are companions of the Aurum Solis does not change this condition. There are no groups of children that are linked, indirectly or not, with the Order.

How do you terminate the membership with the Ordo Aurum Solis?

The process for leaving the Order is the same as in many other groups. You must send a letter of resignation to the House of your membership with a copy of this letter to the secretary of the Order.

There is no status of inactive member in the Aurum Solis. Insofar the status of initiate implies a real connection with the egregore of the Order a resignation means a real disconnection between the member and the Order. So, there is a specific ritual that is performed after a resignation.

What is a House of Aurum Solis?

A “House” is a term for an organized group consisting of initiated members of the Order.

It is necessary to make a distinction between the two words “Temenos,” “Telesterion,” and “Naos,” to only mention these three specific kinds of temples.

A Temenos is a place where spiritual rites are performed.

A Telesterion is the place where initiations and other secret rituals of the Order are performed.

Naos is the place where you meet the Gods and Goddesses.

What are the names of the houses?

Each house has a specific name, a seal and a banner. As the Ordo Aurum Solis is linked to a powerful theurgic egregore the name of the Houses is never communicated to the outside world. Aurum Solis believes that a name has its own power due to both the power of the word and the connection that is made with the egregore of Tradition during the consecration of a house. In the same way as a name of power, it is safely protected. That's why you will see on this website only the countries where there are Official Houses of the Order, maybe the cities, but nothing else. It is also for this reason that the houses of the Order who have websites identify themselves by country and city, without disclosing the esoteric elements that characterize them. It is the same for seals and banners of each House.

How to open a House?

If it doesn’t exist yet a House in your city, area or country, you can indicate your desire to us to open a House. For that, four initiate members are sufficient. After a specific training and special consecrations, the House receives the authorization to perform rituals and initiations. Most of the time the Houses are legally organized according the laws of their country. It is also necessary to hold account of discretion necessary under certain political régimes unfavorable to Freedom.

How is the direction of the House organized?

A House of the Order in the 1st Hall (1st Degree) is called Temenos. Such initiatic structure is run by several Officers. Four constitutes the foundation and are called: Magus, Ensor, Eremitus, and Telestes.

What is the relationship between the Aurum Solis and the Order of the Golden Dawn?

The Aurum Solis and the Order of the Golden Dawn are two different orders. They have no relation to each other and do not belong to the same tradition.

Aurum Solis represents the theurgic Tradition coming from the Egyptian Hermeticism and Neoplatonism.

The Golden Dawn is an offshoot of a Masonic Rosicrucian group called the SRIA.

There is only one Ordo Aurum Solis while there are a large number of orders calling themselves the Golden Dawn.

These traditions are both respectable, but different.

What preparation is needed to be initiated into the Order?

All new students must receive theoretical and ritual preparation. Also, the initiation is preceded by the study of a series of booklets containing theoretical, practical and ritual parts. This process of initiatic preparation is called Pronaos.

Is it necessary to be educated to become a member?

The only thing required is to be able to read.

The practice of rituals and psychic exercises is always the main point.

When we talk about philosophy, this is for us a set of spiritual techniques and precepts.

All of this is accessible to everyone.

However, the Aurum Solis is organized in several levels. This means that those who want to deepen history, philosophy, and religion will receive all the useful tools to do so.

Is it possible to use the techniques and teachings of Aurum Solis individually at home?

It is indeed possible.

However, it is mandatory to be in contact with a group for a number of occasions: initiation (which is necessarily direct) and participation to specific rites. Apart from all this, everything else can be done at home.

Can we move forward in the steps of the Aurum Solis without performing the rituals prescribed?

Absolutely not!

The ritual practices are the axis of the Order. The practice of this curriculum is mandatory to progress in each degree. There are eight steps in the First House. Your mentors will be there to support you in this journey.

If an initiate does not practice the theurgic rites prescribed, he will never be initiated in the following degrees.

Do the rituals of Aurum Solis come from Freemasonry as it is the case in most other Orders?

Freemasonry is a respectable tradition that mostly exists in two ways: 1- philanthropic 2- symbolic and esoteric. This tradition was established in the 18th century in Europe.

The tradition of the Aurum Solis predates Freemasonry and therefore the rituals of the Aurum Solis have no direct connection with it. These two traditions are compatible if we are talking about honest and serious Masonic groups.

Is the Aurum Solis a religious order?

If we consider that a religious order teaches its members the way to develop a relationship with the Divine Powers and the Cosmos, then the Aurum Solis is religious. However, Aurum Solis is not a dogmatic Order. Its roots come from the philosophies of Hermeticism and pre-Christian Ancient Mysteries.

It is a Theurgic Order embodying the Ogdoadic Hermetic Tradition and the Western Mysteries.

It is good to notice that the Aurum Solis contains two components that are offered to the initiates after achieving a certain level of the curriculum. They are the “ Gnostic path” and the “Ecclesia Ogdoadica.” ( You can click on their name to learn more about them).

Is there a link between the Aurum Solis and Templar Orders?

The ancient Templar Order (as the contemporary ones) was created to protect pilgrims travelling to Jerusalem and the places on this land linked to the Christian Tradition. One of their goal was the defense of Christianity against other faiths, mainly Islam. They also created the first banking system used by pilgrims as well as kings.

We have to keep in mind the Knights Templar were a religious army and their attitude was mainly similar to religious fundamentalist we see today. They based their religious order on a text prepared for them by Saint Bernard de Clairvaux. This text is very clear about their duty as you can read in the following excerpt:

“But the soldiers of Christ fight in full security the battles of their Lord, because they do not have to fear to offend God by killing an enemy and they run no danger, if they are killed themselves, since it is for Jesus Christ that they give or receive the blow of death, and that, not only do they not offend God, but also, they acquire great glory: indeed, if they kill, it is for the Lord. [...]

The Christian prides himself on the death of a pagan, because Christ Himself is glorified, but in the death of a Christian the liberality of the King of Heaven is exposed, since he draws his soldier of the melee only to reward him. [...]

May the double sword of the Christians be drawn upon the heads of our enemies, to destroy all that raises against the knowledge of God, that is, against the faith of Christians, so that the infidels may one day say: Where is their God?”

(Excerpt from "Praise of their new militia" by Saint Bernard.)

Despite the obvious historic facts, a lot of legends have been built around these knights. The Middle Ages was a time where myths and facts were always intertwined. However, undoubtedly some of the Templars were initiated to occult traditions and have some influences on the templar architecture and art. It is possible that some of them have been in contact and share this knowledge and tradition. This idea has been emphasized in the occult Western world between the 18th and 20th century. Freemasonry and other esoteric Orders found there a connection between the traditions of the middle East and Europe.

In the 80’s the current Grand Master Jean-Louis de Biasi, received the traditional knighting in two of the most famous Templar Orders. These consecrations were later associated to another authentic lineage. Some years later he offered this knighting to Denning and Phillips who never has this opportunity. As they wrote on September 1995: “You offer to impart to us the benison of the apostolic and chivalric lineages within your keeping and gift is accepted by us, humbly, and with return of the love which has inspired your regard towards us. Your gifts will be received in honour and cherished accordingly. This is a significant development for Aurum Solis, and it means much to us personally.”

(You can learn more in the archives of the Order on this website)

The Grand Master, de Biasi continued during years to deepen its knowledge of this tradition on the esoteric and historic levels. At the beginning of this century, it became evident for him that this tradition was belonging to the past and that its principles were opposite to the non-violent hermetic principles. The rising of the religious wars in the world highlighted this reality even more.

Today, it can be interesting to read and learn about the Knights Templar as a part of the Western Tradition. However, we recommend basing your inquiry on serious historians, archaeology, and theology. Founding a spirituality of these texts explicitly praising religious wars is a non-sense, not matter the motivations are.

We should keep in mind the difference between the principles of the Fedeli d’Amore and the Troubadours aiming to ascend to the divine through love and beauty instead war. This is very different.

Does Aurum Solis allow us to progress socially?

As you've probably figured out, the Aurum Solis is not an employment agency. It is not an organization that distributes diplomas.

However, the Aurum Solis will transform your life in four main ways:

1- Allowing you to cleanse your subtle bodies and give them the best possible radiance.

This is achieved by regular practice of rituals, offered in progressive sequence.

2- Introducing you in a true fraternity where you can meet people from different backgrounds and countries.

This is achieved through a voluntary approach to share expertise, research and contacts.

3- To give you spiritual keys to use in daily life. This is obtained by using visualization, vibration, and use of sacred words and Pentacles. This teaching is done along your progression in the steps of the curriculum.

4- Place you under the protection of the invisible powers of the Theurgic Tradition.

As for the first point, this is achieved by the practice of the various rituals. Manifestation of your real desire, of your regular ritual work, the invisible powers will protect you during your life. This will allow you to avoid serious problems and give you the best of what the divine plan provided for you at this time in your life.

Along your progress in the curriculum of the Aurum Solis you will notice that this improvement can sometimes take surprising aspects.

Does the Aurum Solis allow you to be part of a fraternal chain?

Yes; the fraternal chain consists of all the companions initiated.

Do not forget that it is also a magical chain made of real initiates working ritually linked by consecrated objects. This is how everyone is even closer to each other.

Is the Ogdoadic Tradition - Aurum Solis a Christian Order?

Although a short statement of the Aurum Solis (from the late 90s) could suggest that, it is not. As stated in the first books published by Denning and Phillips while Michael Bernard Foy was Grand Master, the particular interests of the society were Alchemical, Gnostic, Medieval and Celtic traditions. The Order based much of its work on Celtic contacts: the ancient Fire Festivals, Imbolc, Bealteinne, Lughnasadh and Samhuinn, are ritually celebrated year by year.

Of course, the Order also associated to this main purposes Qabalah and esoteric Christianity coming from the Renaissance. Several interesting aspects have been used along with the structure of religious rituals. However, as it was then stated,

the Order wanted to avoid the limitations of the rabbinic traditions or to the stereotyped Judeo-Christian interpretations. They are churches which are doing well their work for those interested. The Aurum Solis (Ogdoadic Tradition) maintains the same position: It is not and cannot be a Christian church or Order per se. Of course, the Aurum Solis is open to people of all faiths. However, any person who believes to have the only truth or intends to convert others to his own belief is not welcome.

As you can see in the history of our Order, the Hermetic tradition was established in ancient Egypt. The Grand Masters of the gold chain have worked to maintain this ancient tradition of Hermetic Mysteries.

During the 5th century, the Emperor Justinian forbade this ancient cult, killing and banishing priests, priestesses and theurgists who refused to convert. The temples were looted and destroyed. Initiates who survived were able to save this precious heritage and kept it secret. Initiates of the Gold Chain continued to practice their rituals, initiations and remained loyal to their Divinities and their ancestors. Th philosopher Pletho and later Marsilio Ficino are good examples of that.

Does the Aurum Solis recommend a specific diet?

The goal to acquire and maintain a good personal balance is a fundamental part of the work of the Aurum Solis. Each one can determine the food and drinks that best suits him in order to maintain good health. This is in accordance with the traditional rule: a healthy mind in a healthy body (Latin: sana in corpore sano).

This is part of self-knowledge. It is impossible to believe that the same rules can be applied to all. It is easy to understand that everyone’s physical, emotional and mental levels are unique. Therefore, it is for you to find the right nutritional balance that suits you.

However, in order to prepare for specific rituals or initiations, the Ordo Aurum Solis recommends specific diets (not extreme) for limited periods. For example, a vegetarian diet can sometimes be used to perform a cleansing of the body. Certain foods can also be suggested for certain periods of time. This is never an absolute rule to last long periods of time.

Does the Aurum Solis support any specific political regime?

No! The Ordo Aurum Solis affirms that the absolute freedom of conscience and respect for the human being are core values. We fully recognize the values of the Order in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Therefore, any dictatorial political regime is contrary to our principles.

Does the Aurum Solis involve specific moral principles?

Yes! the first key principle is: “Do what you like, but do not harm!”

This rule is simple and applies as follows: When you have something to do, imagine that everyone does the same. Would that be good and positive or negative for you and the world at large? Thus you will know what is right.

Meanwhile, we remind you here that some values are essential for us: good will, fellowship, seriousness, hard work, loyalty, honesty and politeness.

How does the Aurum Solis consider local pre-Christian traditions?

A number of countries have local traditions. We think it's very important to keep the ancestral heritage, whether cultural, linguistic, or religious. However, we believe that some aspects need to be adapted to modern times. For example, we are firmly opposed to any form of physical mutilation whatever may be the reason (as in the case of female circumcision).

You can learn more about the latest official declarations of the Order in the Blog.

What is Qabalah?

Qabalah is an esoteric Hebraic current which is based on the five first books of the Torah. Christian scholars of the Renaissance created from the Jewish Qabalah a Christian Qabalah (and they changed the spelling of it) which applies the Jewish Qabalistic methods to the revelations of their religion.

In the 19th century the whole Qabalistic tradition was again enhanced by important currents brought to light by primarily French occultists who sought to develop the ritual and Theurgic aspects of our studies. The techniques of the Qabala also apply to the Greek and Latin alphabets. It is possible to utilize these Qabalistic principles in the study of each of these languages to draw out the genius inherent in each culture. The results of these studies are synthesized in the spiritual current of Hermetism. Our Order is the heir of this tradition and uses what we called the Magic and Hermetic Qabalah.
