Enochian is the name commonly given to an occult or angelic language recorded in the private journals of John Dee and his associate Edward Kelley in late sixteenth-century England. Kelley served as a medium in Dee’s investigations into communication with angels. The two men reported that the language had been revealed to them by angelic beings. It became an integral part of what is now known as Enochian magic.

The surviving journals contain a limited body of texts in this language, only some of which have English translations. Linguistic studies, notably those of Donald Laycock, have questioned claims that its structure provides evidence of an extraordinary or supernatural origin.

Dee did not call the language “Enochian.” Instead, he used terms such as “Angelical,” “Celestial Speech,” “Language of Angels,” “Holy Language,” and “Adamical.” According to the angelic communications recorded in his journals, it was the language Adam had used in Paradise to name all things. The later designation “Enochian” refers to the account that the biblical patriarch Enoch had been the last human being before Dee and Kelley to know this language.
